Did You Know?

From Jered Kolbert:

Did you know that between 1996-1997 and 2006-2007 student enrollment at Slippery Rock University increased by 12.9%, the size of the administration increased by 13.3%, and yet the number of tenure-track faculty declined by 5.7% during the same time period? Information regarding the increase in student enrollment can be accessed at http://administration.sru.edu/ir/headcount/headcount.pdf.

Did you know that between 1996-1997 and 2006-2007 the number of tenure-track faculty at SRU declined by 5.7% while the number of non-tenured faculty increased by 162%?

Did you know that between 1997 and 2006, the average number of students per faculty member at SRU has increased by 10% percent?

Did you know that between the fall of 1994 and the fall of 2006, that after adjusting for inflation, the average salary of management at SRU increased 17.5%, whereas the average salary of faculty at SRU actually decreased 7.3%?

Did you know that the faculty salaries within the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) are often not competitive with public school teachers in the commonwealth? In two Allegheny county school districts, a teacher with a bachelor's degree at the highest step in the salary scale makes between 18.6% and 22.8% more than a PASSHE assistant professor at the highest step, even though the vast majority of assistant professors have doctorates. Even when university faculty members are promoted to associate professor and work to the highest step, public school teachers with a bachelor's degree at the highest step still make more.

Statistics regarding the size of the administration and faculty were obtained from the table listed immediately below:

It is worth noting that even in the face of such an increase in full-time, non tenure-track positions, professors at universities like SRU are generating amazing scholars. I'm a student in the English Department, have had opportuinties to research with professors, been asked to present research at conferences, to submit papers for publication, asked to participate in a variet of scholarly activities, and have been so well prepared that I am now headed for Carnegie mellon's graduate program in Rhetoric, one of the most noted in the nation.
Professors at SRU should be lauded for their dedication to excellence from their students, and their ability to help those students to achieve great things. We mustn't overlook the priceless contributions of our faculty. We must, instead, work very hard to help them maintain that level of dedication and interest by whatever means available.
